To get started with this blank TiddlyWiki, you'll need to modify the following tiddlers:
* SiteTitle & SiteSubtitle: The title and subtitle of the site, as shown above (after saving, they will also appear in the browser title bar)
* MainMenu: The menu (usually on the left)
* DefaultTiddlers: Contains the names of the tiddlers that you want to appear when the TiddlyWiki is opened
You'll also need to enter your username for signing your edits: <>

The test

Some interview candidates have asked about the pre-interview test, so it is only fair to respond to everyone. It will be based on a scenario to test your experience and understanding of the full life cycle of film production. There won't be any technical elements - no filming or editing. There’ll just be you, a laptop and pen and paper – no role play. You will be given 30 minutes for the test and in that time you will be expected to write notes that will form the basis of answers to questions in the interview. We will keep your notes at the end of the interview.

Showcasing your work

Some candidates have provided links to examples of their work e.g. on YouTube. Thank you. If you haven’t sent any examples, or would like to send more, then please email me some links. It would be useful if you can describe what your role was in producing each clip.
Photography is a secondary but important element of the role. If you would like to provide evidence of your photographic and/or image editing skills, please email me some links.
I appreciate that some videos/photos can’t be shared due to privacy/copyright restrictions etc. If you would like to bring a laptop to the interview to show such clips then please do but bear in mind that we only have 45 minutes for each interview. Please let us know in advance if you can only provide such content on a memory stick.
I find it interesting from a creativity perspective to think about video in terms of other media and story telling in older traditions.

Here I experimented with a digital SLR camera -- becoming popular in low cost film making -- and the idea that the magnetic hexagons on the whiteboard were being used in a kind of puppet show. I like the blend of a new technology with a pre-film storytelling technique.
This video is a rough cut and a work in progress. The style of the video is purposefully laboured and the pace painfully slow. Its inspired by an Afghan art-house film that I saw with the architect, pictured uncovering his biomass boiler. There is an attempt at some kind of comedy, a contrast to high paced TV documentaries like Grand Designs.

This is not a finished piece of work. Rather the footage is designed to be incorporated into more footage of the building when it is finished. I concentrated on getting clips I could edit later and to get images that would look good. So I paid particular attention to the panning shots, often a shortcoming.

I used a high quality Monfrotto tripod designed for macro photography with a head that offers fine control in three dimensions. Panning is smoother than my regular tripod. Some of the pan shots here are far to long. I thought that they could be speeded up in editing if needed, but I was also thinking about making the shots as beautiful as possible in their own right. It is personal work, the output of a hobby.

I would like to develop a style using lightweight equipment and physical skills so that I can smoothly move the camera around, using the tripod as a like of steady cam. http://vimeo.com/videoschool/lesson/110/tripod-tricks inspired me to experiment more with tripods.

I am interested in how disciplines like Tai Chi and dance may help to develop an interesting style of my own, one where the movement of the cameraman contributes to the overall aesthetic
In workshops uploading video footage shortly after it has been shot allows students to view them on their phones. Here a QR code is presented on an iPad for scanning. I think it builds trust between camera man and student and confidence between student by showing an institution's ability to use IT in new ways.

With no post-production footage can be delivered to the content management system without delay.
I have found the iPad to be effective when working with groups. Because the display is large compared to a camera, footage can be shown to the people you are working with. I think it puts them more at ease when you can show them the results. If they are worried about a particular shot, you can show them it during the day. It makes the process of making a video more collaborative, the cameraman is also seen as less skilled, not a specialist and more interested in the event than the technical aspects of his or her job.

The iPad also shoots in high definition. Although there were some issues around the compatibility of the file type the iPad uses, more advanced post production was possible. Here the video has been taken into Adobe Premier, the colors have been corrected. A logo has been added to the top right hand corner. A voice over has been recorded and edited in Adobe Soundbooth.
Each year I go to Liverpool and let chance guide what I produce. In 2011 I ended up making a video with a Taylor.

Adding titles and credits is the first step up. Here basic graphic design and a photograph of a business card are added. Its not difficult to do.

<<tiddler [[Knights Move>
Sometimes black and white video is worth considering. The following video is shot in the same location as the last one. Colours and patterns in clothing and background can sometimes distract from the subject, especially under poor light conditions with low-tech equipment. And when still images are added -- as they have been here -- black and white ones are easier to match into the overall feel of the video.

For use in ViewTemplate and EditTemplate. Example usage:
{TaskToolbar}
{}

Warning: the showWhen and hideWhen macros will blindly eval paramString.
This could be used to execute harmful javascript from a tiddler.

(TODO: Make some effort to sanitize paramString. Perhaps disallow the equals sign?)

A lightweight tripod and compact camera is becoming a favourite way of capturing video. Here I am testing in the changing room of a taylor's workshop in Liverpool.

The image is a screenshot of a video on Vimeo, see it http://vimeo.com/32080200

In post production still photographs can be added to video. Stills appear sharper and there is no camera shake. Depending on the context and location, continuous filming and taking photographs both have advantages. Shooting with the editing process in mind extends the creative process while in the field.

Setting the camera to take busts of photographs enables animation like effects in post-production, half way between moving and still images.

Black and white footage can be appropriately used in research videos. In the video below, the primary motivation for shooting the footage in black and white was the idea that body language and gesture would be more noticeable with colour removed. But black and white takes up less memory and when shooting a lot of footage, file size becomes important in post production.

I sometimes think that people are more at ease when they know that the video is not for display or marketing purposes, especially when they are working. I wanted the act of recording to interfere with the students as little as possible. One group was keen to be filmed and to explain their process. I adapted my strategy and asked questions with the permission of the supervising academic.

This video is a prototype for a research proposal about team work and leadership styles in international MBA students.

Shot over two days, the student groups were filmed in roughly 20 second clips throughout the workshop. Each team's video was then edited together and presented with a graph produced from questionnaire data in a webpage. In this video, the footage from two groups is presented to compare the teams' cultures.

People are increasingly using their phones in their conversations. Filming of mobile phones and iPads opens up some interesting ways of telling stories.

Here a short video shot during such a discussion is mixed with high quality still images shot on a digital SLR in RAW format. Ken Burns effects have been used to pan over the hexagons in time to the commentary.
